His 53rd Birthday

I wish I could personally give you these flowers and catch the vivid reflection of them in the glare of your eyes, feel the warmth of your cheek against mine, feel the scruff of your beard one last time, sing to you while you sing along, and wish you another happy birthday followed by a long embrace. I'd hold you forever if I could. We still yearn for your smile and your laugh and everything that made you, you. And some days it's the little things that remind us that you're no longer around. And the pain comes unexpectedly... and it goes away just as fast. But heaven obviously couldn't wait for you. With this familiar lump in my throat, I'd like to wish you a happy birthday. I love you Dad.
